The house a two story Regency style was built about 1830 as a Dower House for Powerscourt and sited to give superb views to the waterfalls and the wicklow Mountains. Some of the planting including a weeping tulip tree and the avenue trees, date from this period. The 1850's and 1860's saw the introduction of conifers from the west coast of America-giant Redwood, (Now 7m in girth), Noble Fir, Thuya and Douglas ir. From the turn of the century to the present day, planting has continued with Rhododendrons, Australian and Far Eastern shrubs, old roses and an extensive collection of perennials all enjoying the relativly mild location. The main features of the garden lie along the winding paths ascending the steep slope of the rockery from the little pool garden to the open sunny banks at the top, and leading eventually to the waterfall viewing terrace. The garden is very densely planted to give features for every season-Summer flowering perennials succeed the Spring bulbs and are in turn surpassed by the Autumn blaze of shrubs.
