The National Adventure Centre at Tiglin is owned and run by the Association for Adventure Sports (AFAS), the national co-ordinating body for a wide range of adventure sports. The Centre was opened in 1971 to fulfil the AFAS aim of making adventure sports widely available and to promote a high level of skill and safety for participants and leaders in these activities. Set in the heart of the Devil's Glen forest in a deeply rural area, the Centre is only an hour's drive from Dublin.
Description
Facilities: The Centre is housed in a large, sensitively restored, 19th Century farm courtyard. The buildings are centrally heated with showers, drying room, large dining room, shop, bar and barbecue area, and an indoor rock-climbing area. There is accommodation for 46 people in bedrooms which each hold either two or four people in two double bunks. All rooms are provided with duvets and bedding. Orienteering takes place in the woods while rockclimbing and canoeing use one of several local venues. For more advanced courses the crags at Glendalough and Luggala are within easy reach as are many fine white water rivers. The Wicklow Mountains, the most extensive upland area in Ireland, offer fine walking and wilderness camping. Mountain biking along forest trails and snorkelling at Bride's Bay are all part of the Tiglin package. GROUPS Much of the work of Tiglin is centred around running courses for groups and schools. Any group of people, preferably eight or more, may book as a group and we will arrange a programme around you specific needs. This is the ideal choice for clubs, corporate groups, schools, schools or simply a group of friends who would like a weekend with a difference. SCHOOLS Some schools use Tiglin as part of their outdoor Sports programme, some as part of environmental studies, and nsome as part of transition year. Most come for reasons loosely connected with the development of social skills and experiences. Equipment: Tiglin can supply you with most of the specialist clothing and equipment needed for your course. Participants on some advanced courses, and some assessment courses will be expected to bring their own personal equipment. On reciept of a booking form you will be sent a list of clothing and other items you should bring with you.
Location
The National Adventure Centre is situated in the Devil's Glen Forest about 5 km from Ashford, 8 km from Roundwood and about 45 km from Dublin (see map).
