The Parnell Summer School, organised by the Parnell Society, aims to explore the relevance of Parnell, his family and the politics of their era to modern Ireland. Of the two dominant themes of Parnell's life, home rule and the land question, it is land and people's relationships with it that has continued to play a significant role in Irish society and culture. The main theme for this year's Summer School is Land, people and politics. In the sylvan setting of the Parnell ancestral home, a distinguished panel of speakers will explore the significance of the land and rural society through a series of lectures and symposia. Subjects examined will include: aspects of the nineteenth-century land question; issues that have dominated rural society in the twentieth century; and those now facing the countryside as we enter the twenty-first century; as well as themes of the land in art and literature. A stimulating and varied programme of academic and social interest has been developed which includes sightseeing trips, a workshop on local history, music sessions, table quiz and ceili.
Description
The school is intended for those with a general interest in Irish history, politics, literature and society.
