The house a two story Regency style was built about 1830 as a Dower House for Powerscourt and sited to give superb views to the waterfalls and the wicklow Mountains. Some of the planting including a weeping tulip tree and the avenue trees, date from this period. The glorious formal gardens at Powerscourt, which boast stunning views of the Sugar Loaf Mountain, is one of the County Wicklow's best loved attractions.
The gardens, spanning 47 acres, began when the house was built for Richard Wingfield between 1731 and 1740. A century later the 7th Viscount Powerscourt decided to expand the family fortunes with the creation of an elaborate garden.
