It seems that everybody loves The Wineport. Young and old, rich and otherwise, couples and families golfers and sailors, those who hate golf and sailing. It is a charming place. They provide menus for just about everyone: Brunch for late Sunday, with duck liver salad, cod fillet with a basil and pine nut sauce; buckwheat and vegetable pies, a traditional roast. For the kids there will be ham 'n' mushroom pizza, small portions of soup, ice-cream cones. For golfers there are late afternoon menus: steamed mussels; panfried sirloin steak; stir-fried chicken and vegetables. For those who pursue good food without the interruption of needless sporting behaviour, the menu is welcomingly balanced: baked goat's chese and oven-dried tomatoes with a walnut and herb vinaigrette; a terrine of smoked salmon with a yogurt and chive cream; ravioli filled with spinach and cheese with a tomato and basil sauce finished with shavings of Parmesan. Honest, achievable, fine tasting food. The Wineport sits hard on the inner lakes of Lough Ree, and can even be reached by boat.
