The lough is deep, has comparatively few shallows and it is often productive to continue fishing well out into the deep. The duck fly hatch commences around mid-April, followed by lake olives. The may fly hatch is sparse. The best fishing on the lough is usually at night-time. From late July to the end of the season dapping the grasshopper provides good sport. Traditional and imitative fly patterns are recommended....

Lough Ree Lough Club, at Ballymore just 5 km north of Athlone, is the second oldest Yacht Club in the world, dating back to 1720 or earlier.
