A picturesque village on the River Inny, between Lough Sheelin and Kinale. In the centre of the village there is a memorial to Myles "Slasher" O'Reilly, who defended the town bridge in 1646, during the Confederate wars. Lake shore and Woodland Walks: The development of the lake shore area and also the inclusion of the walkway through the woodlands has been undertaken by Westmeath County Council since its' acquisiton of the property in 1981. The lough is deep, has comparatively few shallows and it is often productive to continue fishing well out into the deep. The duck fly hatch commences around mid-April, followed by lake olives. The may fly hatch is sparse. The best fishing on the lough is usually at night-time. From late July to the end of the season dapping the grasshopper provides good sport.
