In the centre of the village there is a memorial to Myles "Slasher" O'Reilly, who defended the town bridge in 1646, during the Confederate wars. The lough is deep, has comparatively few shallows and it is often productive to continue fishing well out into the deep. The duck fly hatch commences around mid-April, followed by lake olives. The may fly hatch is sparse. The best fishing on the lough is usually at night-time. From late July to the end of the season dapping the grasshopper provides good sport. Traditional and imitative fly patterns are recommended....
