To our forefathers the west held the promise of new possibilities, of undiscovered land, of a legacy to pass on and of unknown excitement. Today, the west still holds that promise, although one need not cross the Atlantic to fulfill it, but merely wind the way west along the road to Strabane.
Strabane holds a rare and rich trove of experience to be enjoyed, preserved and built-on so that future generations may delight in this legacy.
Description
The secrets of time are etched into the scenery of Strabane. Where you begin is optional but the choices are many. Sweep across the Sperrins and visit the Sperrin Heritage Centre to unearth the story of the land itself, told in the exhibition "Treasure of the Sperrins".
The exhibition tells the story of gold, glaciation and of the people of the Sperrins. Visitors can also try their hand at panning for gold.
Romance and nobility intertwine in the stories of two castles in Dunnamanagh. Construction of Earl's Gift Castle began in 1629, but the interference of fortune prevented its completion. It was to be a gift for Sir John Drummond's French betrothed, whose untimely death at sea has left the building unfinished to this day.
Ogilby's Castle, built in 1860, would have been the dwelling of James Ogilby, had he not rebelled against the family by falling in love with a factory girl. James disappeared for seven years, only returning to elope with his love, whom he married in Derry.
Other castles in the district include Harry Avery's Castle, a stronghold of the O'Neill’s dating from the 14th Century, and the ruins of Turlough's Castle in Newtownstewart.
There are a number of events throughout the year which offer an excellent opportunity to get involved with the local community.
The tale of two countries is told along the American Trail Tour. The tour follows the fortunes of influential Irish-Americans who originated from this region, beginning at the ancestral home of the eleventh U.S. President, James Knox Polk. Visitors may lose themselves in a splendid 18th Century walled garden, enjoy home baking in the tea room, or purchase local goods in the craft shop.
The Presidential connection continues with the Wilson Homestead in Dergalt, Strabane. This was the home of James Wilson, grandfather of Woodrow Wilson, 28th President of the United States (1913-21). The traditional thatched homestead still remains and is open to the public.
