For many seasoned anglers, the fishing in Northern Ireland, and particularly in the Sperrin Region, ranks among the best anywhere. The Foyle, for example, is known to prominent local fisherman - and an increasing number of visiting anglers - as one of salmon fishing's best-kept secrets, ranking alongside better-known rivers such as the Tay, the Dee and the Spey.

Angling The Sperrin Region
Angling The Sperrin Region
Description
In the Glenelly Valley, the river sports and spirals between the slanting walls of the mountains, its secluded waters teeming with brown trout, sea trout and salmon - the fishing is particularly reliable during the summer and autumn months. To the east of the Sperrins, the Ballinderry River is full of brown trout, dolaghan and salmon, and is the chief trout river in the North. The Moyola and Drumragh are equally well stocked with game fish, and the Mourne is an exceptional salmon river. The picturesque Camowne and Owenreagh may be fished right through September and October. All are spate rivers in the Foyle system including the Faughan, Owenkillew and Glenelly and are rewarding salmon rivers. You could also try the Finn, known among experts for its superb spring salmon and quality fishing at high water. The Sperrin Region offers some of the finest coarse fishing in western Europe including selected small lake angling in Sough Tyrone and river angling along the Lower Bann, Blackwater and Lough Beg. You will be spoilt for choice with an abundance of pollen, perch, bream, roach, rudd, and pike. Why not enjoy a day's eel or coarse fishing on the River Bann near Toombridge. You'll find beam, roach, hybrids throughout the Bann System and Pike in Lough Beg. Record catches of course fish are enjoyed at Lough Beg and Lower Bann of 20 - 30kgs per day.
