Some tricky driving would be rewarded with a breath-taking view at the carpark beside the 'graves of the leinstermen' but its virtual equivalent is available 1km along the main road at a parking area in a spot traditionally called 'The Look Out'. To the extreme left the Slieve Bernaghs, 533 m at peak, lean over a finger of County Clare dipped in the lake. The Slieve Aughty range rises behind Holy island or Iniscealtra with its distinctive round tower. an even higher road takes you to the summit of toutinna . From the summit car park the view stretches over the whole of Lough Derg dotted with tiny islands and eastwards to the Tipperary hills. The drive is narrow and should be approached with caution. Note evidence of slate -a-plenty to the left.
