Saint Patricks Well Church And Cross

Tipperary
South Tipperary
Phone: Fax:
A number of wells rise up at this eerie spot where one could imagine that people in times past could have wondered at the primeval power of nature. St. Patrick is said to have visited the place, and the water is said to cure 'sore lips, sore eyes, the scrofula and several other chronic diseases'.

In the middle of a pond is an early cross, and beside it is a church which was built on the site of a 12th century edifice, but which in its present mutilated form dates probably from the 16th century. The church was dependent on the Cistercian Abbey of Inislounaght.
,br> In 1619 Pope Paul granted a plenary indulgence valid for 30 years to all who visited the church of St. Patrick's day and on the feast of Pentecost. In the church are remnants of a number of tombs, one of which, that of Nicholas White who died in 1622, was brought here from St. Mary's Church, Clonmel, in 1805.
