Saint Cronans Church Cross And Round Tower
Roscrea
North Tipperary
Phone: Fax:
The modern road cuts through a monastery founded by St Cronan who died between 600 and 620.
Description
Description
Description
The monastery was active during the 12th century during which it was, however either plundered or burned four times. Of the 12th century romanesque church only the west facade remains beside the road.
About the round headed doorway is a hood moulding enclosing the figure of a bishop or abbot, probably St Cronan, and on each side of the door there is a series of blind arcades. The rest of the church was demolished in 1812 and was replaced by the church in the churchyard. Just to the north is a 12th century High Cross with Christ and interlacing motifs on the west face, and a bishop (St Cronan) on the east face.
The cross is unusual in having two figures (one male and one female) at the bottom of the north and south faces of the shaft. On the opposite side of the road is a round tower which has the representation of a ship on the inner face of a window about 7.6m above the ground. the Tower was originally 6.1 m higher, but was reduced to its present height by the English in 1798 after one of their sentinels was shot from the top of it by a sniper. work is currently under way to develop a Monastic theme Park at this site.
