when seen from afar the gently sloping Slievefelims often seem to be bathed in a pearly light. They are a nice range of hills, and they rise just east of Glenstal Abbey , reaching their maximum height in Cullaun peak (465 m) . They are part of a large mountain area in north east Limerick and north Tipperary which includes the Silvermines , Keeper Hill and Mauherslieve Mountain. There is a pleasant drive from Newport to Rear Cross (13km) , the road running beside the Clare River at the bottom...

In a 1.5km a road junction gives a good view of the conical Knockastakeen (477M) , Galteemore (the big Galtee; it is the highest at 919m) and Lyracoppul (827m) right. In 2km, having passed or delayed at two excellent hotels and a fish farm, turn left at a pub for Tipperary, 1.5 km on, near the Christ the King statue on the V high up on Slievenamuck (the Pigs Hill ) (368 m) are parking spaces for the piece de resistance: the view across the Glen - river sparkling through it - of the three peaks...

Some tricky driving would be rewarded with a breath-taking view at the carpark beside the 'graves of the leinstermen' but its virtual equivalent is available 1km along the main road at a parking area in a spot traditionally called 'The Look Out'. To the extreme left the Slieve Bernaghs, 533 m at peak, lean over a finger of County Clare dipped in the lake.
