The lake area is one of those rare places where wildfowl, human kind and vegetation live side by side. Covering some six hectares in size, the lake is man-made, having been developed by Stephen Moore in 1769 from a Swamp. The landscaping of the area was not carried out until the 19th Century. It was always a place for wildfowl: the common coot, waterhen, mallard, widgeon, pochard and teal.
