The Library is a simple structure, recently renovated by GPA. It was built in 1836, by William Tinsley, a Clonmel builder- architect, who executed many commissions in Co Tipperary, including the re-modelling of the square in Cahir. He emigrated to the USA in 1851, where his major work included University Halll (Madison, Wis.) and the Ohio Institute for the Education of the Blind (Columbus, Ohio). The Library was founded by Theophilus Bolton, Archbishop of Cashel (1730-44) and comprises a very fine collection of printed books (1473 - 1800). Some 12,000 titles in all, this includes hundreds of rare and beautiful items, a selection from which is on display. There are a few manuscript volumes (earliest, 1168), and some of these may be seen from time to time. A small collection of silver (earliest piece, 1585) is also on show. A genealogical research resource is available.
