Fethard Church And Town Walls
Fethard
South Tipperary
Phone: Fax:
Fethard is a small town which retains a remarkable number of medieval remnants. The exterior of Holy Trinity Church off the main street incorporates parts of a 15th century church, including windows, the west tower and part of a transept. In the wall of the churchyard are some tower houses (15th century?); in all about 4 tower-houses (none really accessible) are preserved in the town.
In the fire-depot beside the entrance to the church, remnants of a 16thg century house can be seen, and coats of arms and a 17th century Crucifixion have been built into its walls. Parts of the old town wall are preserved; a gate in the wall can be studied where the road to Moyglass passes underneath it. The wall can also be seen at other points in the town. They were not strong enough to prevent Cromwell taking the town in 1650. At the east end of the town is an Augustinian Abbey founded around 1306 on lands granted by Walter de Mulctoe.
The best-preserved portion is the north transept.

Description
As the church is still in use, it gives some idea of the atmosphere of the original medieval Augustinian church. In the wall of the abbey are a number of 16th and 17th century tombstones, and also a sheela-na-gig. The Abbey was dissolved in 1540 and granted to Sir Edmund Butler in 1545.
