Yeats Country and Benbulben
Benbulben
Sligo

You're never far from Benbulben on this tour, the mountain that so inspired Yeats. The coast is quiet and much broken; inland are lakes and pastures.
This area is called 'Yeats Country' as the poet passed much of his childhood and was eventually buried here, though his adult life was largely spent in Dublin, and in Galway at Thoor Ballylee or at Coole Park.
Above Sligo Town the curious hulk of Benbulben looms like a capsized ship, its flat limestone top scored by erosin. Off the N15 north of Sligo is Drumcliff churchyard, where Yeat's tomb lies. Minor roads from the N15 lead past the headland of Rosses Point.
Further up, follow the coastal turning to Lissadell House (open June-mid-September), 19th-century home of the Gore-Booth family. Sisters Eva Gore-Booth and Constance Markiewicz, friends of Yeats, took part in the Easter Rising. The house, in need of restoration, is surrounded by rampant vegetation. On the promontory of Mullaghmore is Classie Bawn (private), former home of Lord Mountbatten who was killed on his boat by the IRA in 1979.
From the resort of Bundoran a signed leisure drive to Manorhamilton takes you past typical limestone ridge scenery.

From here, go west around the north shore of Glencar Lough, where a waterfall drops 10m through ferny rocks to a pool (in Yeat's poem The Stolen Child). Return to Sligo, then strike east for a circuit of Lough Gill, famous for the lake-isle, Innisfree.
Summer cruises are available from Sligo, Dromahair or Parke's Castle. Other sites on the lough are the ruined Creevelea Friary, and the Deerpark Monument, a series of stone burial chambers dating from about 3500BC.
