Lissadell House
Lissadell House
Phone direct :
Drumcliffe, Sligo
Lissadell - "That old Georgian Mansion" in the words of W.B. Yeats - is still owned by the Gore-Booth family. A fine but austere example of Greek-Revival architecture, it is full of many artefacts associated with succeeding generations of the family. Visitors can expect a genuine atmosphere of faded grandeur....
Sligo Abbey
Sligo Abbey
Phone direct :
Abbey Street, Sligo, Sligo
Sligo Abbey was founded in 1252 or 1253 for the Dominicans by Maurice Fitzgerald, 2nd Baron of Offaly, who was also founder of the town. Having escaped the ravages suffered by the now destroyed Sligo Castle in the 13th and 14th centuries, the Friary was accidentally burned in 1414, but was rebuilt two years later by Friar Bryan MacDonagh with assistance from Pope John XXIII.
In 1568 O'Conor Sligo made a petition to Queen Elizabeth not to dissolve the Friary, and this was granted on t...
Inishmurray Island
Inishmurray Island
Phone direct :
Mullaghmore, Mullaghmore, Sligo
Inishmurray is one mile long and half a mile wide at its widest point and was inhabited by between 50 and 100 people up to 1957, when the entire population moved to the mainland. The remains of the village are on the south side of the island, as is the Cashel which contains pre Christian and early Christian antiquarian remains such as cursing stones, altars, beehive cells, etc.
The Island is also a noted breeding ground for numerous birds including the Eider Duck. A day trip is re...
Carrowmore Megalithic Cemetery
Carrowmore Megalithic Cemetery
Phone direct :
Carrowmore, Sligo
Distributed over many acres and extending into adjoining townlands, Carrowmore represents the largest grouping of megalithic monuments in Ireland, and immense Neolithic burial ground where once there may have been more than a hundred tombs. Casual exploration in the last century and present day gravel quarrying in the vicinity have devalued the archaeological potential of the site; but it is still a rewarding place to visit, steeped in atmosphere and evoking a sense of the past.
The s...
Knocknashee
Knocknashee
Phone direct :
Sligo, Sligo
An exciting archaeological discovery in recent years was the identification of a hillfort at Knocknashee during an archaeological survery of county Sligo by the OPW in 1988.
Knocknashee means Hill of the Faries. It's 700m long and 320m wide. The site is located on a spectacular limestone table top plateau commanding a widespread view over the north Connacht plain. The area is enclosed by the two earth and stone ramparts in 53 acres.
The inner rampart skirts the edge of the pl...

Culkins Emigration Museum
Culkins Emigration Museum
Phone direct :
Cannaghanally, Dromore west, Sligo
Culkin's Emigration Museum relives a poignant era when emigration was the only hope for a better life, a finality in itself, when whole families were scattered to the winds of fortune, some never to return.
The Museum, on a site where once stood the gateway to new worlds in the form of Daniel Culkin's Shipping and Emigration Agency, brings back to life this landmark - which operated from the 19th century right up to the 1930's - in a purpose built modern museum, with a host of fascinat...
