The lough is deep, has comparatively few shallows and it is often productive to continue fishing well out into the deep. The duck fly hatch commences around mid-April, followed by lake olives. The may fly hatch is sparse. The best fishing on the lough is usually at night-time. From late July to the end of the season dapping the grasshopper provides good sport. Traditional and imitative fly patterns are recommended.
Location
Lough Owel is located 4kms. (2-1/2 miles) north/west of Mullingar beside the N6 road. It is a large regular shaped lough 6 kms. (4 miles) long, 3 kms. (2 miles) wide, with an area of 1100 hectares (2500 acres).
