At the end of Ireland's widest main street - laid out by the 2nd Lord Hartland as the widest street in Europe - a Georgian Gothic arch leads to Strokestown Park House, seat of the Pakenham Mahon family from 1600 to 1979.

Strokestown House is one of the finest Palladian Houses and was lived in by the Pakenham - Mahon family from 1660-1979. the most hated and notorious of them was Major Denis Mahon who succeeded to Strokestown in 1845. His reputation as a ruthless landlord was confirmed by multiple evictions. Finally in an attempt to clear the lands he paid for several ships, to transport them to America.
