Other places worth a visit are: The Aringna Mining Experience is situated in North Rocommon very close to the Leitrim border. This centre was developed to give visitor an insight into what coal mining was like in the Arigna Valley from the 1700's right through until the mine's closure in 1990. Visitors can take the underground tour and experioence for themselves what it was like to work in the narrow coal seams. Strokestown Park House is an 18th century mansion which has been beautifully restored with original furnishings and professionally guided tours allowing visitors to browse about the house and it's surroundings. Also at Strokestown House and well worth a visit is the Famine Museum which uses a combination of original documents and images from the Strokestown Park collection to explain the circumstances of the Great Irish Famine of the 1840's. This collection boasts a wide range of papers including actual letters written by the tenants on the Strokestown Estate at the time of the famine.
