Monaghan Town has one of the finest museums in the world, "County Museum", located on Hill Street. Its aim is to provide an education and service for the county and to collect and preserve its heritage.
Monaghan County Museum was established by Monaghan County Council in 1974. Its brief is to provide an education and leisure service for County Monaghan and to collect, preserve and display the heritage of the County. Archaeology, local history, folk life, crafts, transport, coinage and industry are among the principal areas of interest. The unique 14th Century Cross of Clogher and the fine collection of early medieval crannog (lake dwelling) artefacts are among the best items in the museum.

In 1980, Monaghan County Museum received a major international distinction, winning the Council of Europe Museum Prize. In 1993, it also won the Gulbenkian/Norwich Union Best Collections Care Award.
