The site is intimately associated with the lighting of the first Paschal Fire in Ireland by St. Patrick in 433, thus symbolising the triumph of Christianity over paganism.
St. Erc founded a monastery here in Early Christian times, and there was also a medieval abbey here, but little is known about the history of the place until it was rebuilt in its present form in 1512 when Sir Christopher Flemming founded a small Franciscan Third Order friary here.

Description

It is built around an open quadrangle, with the priests' residence on the north side, and a tower on the south side. In the south wall there are some fine windows, forming part of what was probably a refectory or reading room. The use of the other rooms is not known, but most of them have fireplaces. Built into the west wall of the southern wing is the representation of a dragon. To the east of the college are the remains of a gateway, possibly built after the College went out of use at the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1541.
