From Donore Hill the ground slopes down to the river, and her on 1 July 1690 (12 July by the modern calendar), William III defeated the exiled James II for the crown of England. James had his headquarters in the medieval church ruin on the summit of Donore Hill. The Williamite army crossed the Boyne at several points, forcing the Jacobites to fall back on Donore and eventually to Duleek. The Williamite commander, General Schomberg, was killed while leading an attack across the principal ford at Oldbridge, and William himself received a shoulder would during reconnaissance before the battle. On the county Lough bank of the river is the ravine called King William's Glen.
