Lough Carra which is situated south of Ballintubber is a limestone lake of around 4003 acres. The lake is a haven for the angler. It has a good stock of trout and it has one of the earliest and heaviest rises of May-fly in Western Europe. The lake is also of great historical interest. Along its shores stands Moore Hall, the historic home of the Moores and Castleburke, the ruins of the 15th century Norman de Burgo castle. Doon Archaeological Nature peninsula is a site of National importance. This lakeshore Promontory Fort is an area of great beauty, enriched by history.
