Western Ocean Weekend September 11th to 13th There are three days of varied walking - from large plantation forest to cliff top trail; from offshore island to beaches and sand dunes. Day one: Sheskin Forest, north Mayo - park of the largest tract of land in Ireland with no through road, at some 500 km. A five hour hike through the forest, home to Red Deer, Red Grouse, Otter, Pine Marten, Irish Hare and others. Followed by a short 1 hour stroll along a nice cliff top walk at Ceathru Thaidhg, to look out over the ocean. Day Two - Iniskea South Island, off Mayo's wester coast - uninhabited since the 1930's and a birdlife sanctuary. A 4 - 5 hour relaxed walk through history, with stunning Atlantic Ocean views, Grey Seals and many bird species, including Cormorant, Shag, Fulmar, Raven, Oystercatcher, etc. Day Three - the Mullet Peninsula - A 3-4 hour stroll, along the beaches and sand dunes of this beautiful and remote part of Ireland's west. Great views in all directions and over the offshore islands. Accommodation - Shared twin rooms in our environmentally conscious guesthouse. www.leimsiar.com, boasting geothermal heating and solar powered hot water. Full B&B, plus dinner on days one and two, plus packed lunch on each of the three days. Walking each day is on reasonably flat ground, with little gradient. However, mayo can be wet and heavy underfoot (especially on Day One), so a reasonable level of fitness is required. Good hiking boots(preferably waterproof) and wet gear essential. More then that, a true love of the outdoors and enthusiasm for walking would be great!
