Carlingford Harbour
This was once a fertile area of land between the Carlingford Mountains and the Mourne Mountains, or so legend would have it. It said that a volcanic eruption caused the sea to flow over the area and in doing so drowned the prehistoric city of Cathar Linn, which means City of the Pool. It is also thought that the body of the legendary character Finn McCool lies in the hills behind Carlingford village. Carlingford is typical of a medieval village, though its rich history of course precedes this era. St. Patrick is thought to have landed here before venturing further to Strangford Lough, County Down, to begin his famous mission. The village was raided by the Vikings in the 8th and 9th centuries and again by the Normans in the 12th century.
