A focal point of the northern midlands where the provinces of Leinster, Ulster and Connaught all converge, Longford, where history and literature, tragedy and triumph are all woven together, takes its name from the ancient stronghold of the O'Farrell family (Long Fort - Fort of the O'Farrells). Bordered to the West by the majestic River Shannon, Longford is a county of rolling plains and picturesque stretches of water. The highest point of the county, Cairn Hill, is only 279 m high, but from atop the summit glorious views in all directions are afforded.
Description
It was here in north-west Co. Longford that General Humbert's army, en route from Castlebar to Dublin, was defeated by a much larger English Force. Despite the defeat, many stories of courage and heroism emerged from the battle. None is more touching than that of Gunner Magee. In charge of a canon he stayed till the very end, using the pots and pans as shrapnel and mounting his broken weapon on the backs of two comrades. His efforts were valiant but fruitless. The recoil broke the backs of his friends and he himself was cut down moments later. Memorials to Gunner Magee and General Blake are erected in the nearby old cemetery at Tubberpatrick, 5 km north of Ballinamuck.
Location
Ballinamuck is situated just off the L15, 17 km north of Longford.
