Scenic drives in Carrick on Shannon
Where the river Shannon Flows
The Shannon is a splendid river- but it owes its splendor not only to its winding length but also to the many large and beautiful lakes which it drains. This drive will dazzle the tourist with lake vistas; Lough Key, Lough Arrow, Lough Skean, Lough Meelagh, Lough Allen and others. All lie amid forests and greenery in all its shades . A tour in Leitirm is a recipe for relaxation and renewal.
O'Carolan Country Tour
O'Carolan Country Tour One day Tour 120km This tour starts from the attractive riverside and marina town of Carrick on Shannon. Drive towards Boyle and visit the Lough Key Forest Park with its numerous facilities from lakeside restaurant and caravan park to boating and nature trails. Discover the 13th century Boyle Abbey in Boyle town. Then on by Lough Key's Doon Shore, enjoy the magnificent view of this island studded lake, to Carrigeenroe and by the east shore of Lough Arrow to Riverstown and to Dromahair. The next town is Drumkeeran, where you drive south by the western side of lough Allen to busy Drumshanbo. From here the route takes you to the mountain scenery of Arigna and on to Deadue where O'Carolan, the last of the Irish bards is buried. Turlough O'Carolan, (1670-1738) the composer of the melody 'The Star Spangled Banner' travelled this area from his home in Alderford House. Ballyfarnan, where he lived with his patrons, the McDermot Roe family.
