In the surrounding area, there are historic sites, forest walks, nature wonders, rolling rivers with pastureland and some breathtaking scenery.

Driving Tours
Caltlecomer on the N78
This attractive little town in the hilly northern park of Kilkenny lies in a wooded valley, where the River Dinin is joined by a tributary from the West. Though the centre of the country’s largest coalfield has a scenic charm not usually associated with colliery areas.
You can also enjoy the 18 hole golf course or the beautiful lakes which are stocked for fishing.
Gowran
Located on the N9, St Marys, the richly ornamented, medieval Collegain Church, dates from 1275 and features monuments of great beauty from the 14th to 17th centuries.
Horse racing and golf can also be enjoyed locally.
Jerpoint
As part of the craft trail, near Thomastown on the N9.
For more than 800 years, this Abbey has graced the landscape. The skilled carvings embellishing the cloisters, the delightful, graceful east window and the richness of the stories, which are so well told by the guides make this a visit not to be missed.
Old Leighlin
Located off the N9 and at the foothills of the Ridge of Lenister.
Saint Lazerians Cathedral is a 13th century building. It replaced a 7th century monastery, which once accommodated 1.500 monks. This site was the location of an important church, Synod in 630AD. It agreed the system for establishing the date of Waste each year, a formula used to this day.
Guides tours are available only on a request basis.
Kilkenny City
Ireland’s Medieval Capital
If you decide to visit Kilkenny City, try to include a trip to the enchanting Rose Garden overlooking the crystal waters of the River Nore, this Ormond Castle, now fully restored and furnished in 1830’s splendour. A popular and enjoyable way to see Kilkenny city is to take the Tynan Walking Tour. This tour departs from the 16th century Shee Alms House - Kilkenny Tourist Office.
Bród Tullaroan
The Loury Meagher Heritage Centre. A 17th Century thatched mansion and the County Hurling Museum.
Open March to October.
Whatever your reasons for visiting Kilkenny, this is a place you can rejuvenate your youthful high spirits and energy, making sure you are primed for enjoyment.
