The quiet little place where red-eyed travellers and sozzled showband folk used to stop for a bacon sandwich suddenly transformed itself into the Las Vegas of Kildare. The new owner from Galway, has continued to progress. They will soon boast a drive in hatch - take away the food without even getting out of the car - a self-service restaurant area for buses and coaches, a room reserved for truckers, a new shower and now toilets. It's not just truckers and travellers, however. Local families will be in here at the weekends, enjoying fresh salmon or roast lamb, and meanwhile, there are guaranteed to be an endless parade of jocks enjoying the trucker's lunch special of soup or salad, steak with onions and chips, and a choice of puddings, such as jelly and ice cream, home made apple tart, apple crumble, or sherry trifle. Is that the kind of comfort grub we crave when travelling westwards from Dublin, or what?
