Just as The O' Meara reflects personality, so too do the 18 "links style" holes designed by Colin Montgomerie (in association with Stan Eby of European Golf Design), which opened in 2003 to critical acclaim. Although bordered by a variety of beautiful, mature trees on the estate, the course is actually quite barren looking, with shimmering fescue grasses seperating the fast running fairways. There is a great mix of holes: long par fours backed up with tricky short ones. The bunkers are well positioned and deep, the greens are a near perfect texture with sensible slopes and interesting contours. The Montgomerie has everything that encourages strategic play that helps to make gold so fascinating.
