Killarney National Park is the ideal wilderness for the committed walker and for those who want short, stimulating and exceedingly beautiful walks. One walk circumvents Muckross Lake and is 13km of scenic splendour all the way. Another passes through Tomies Wood, a fine oak wood nestled between Tomies Mountain and Lough Leane, and includes the picturesque O'Sullivan's Cascade. The walk from Knockreer House to Ross Castle is delghtful and offers fine views. A longer trek travels the shoulder of Mangerton Mountain and includes the Old Kenmare road. The Gap of Dunloe offers another spectacular walk, which one may have to share with ponies and ponies and traps. The Kerry Way, along distance walking route, starts in Killarney. Gap of Dunloe: The Gap of Dunloe is a wild and rugged gap excavated by forging ice flows during the Ice Age. It is signposted off the R562 road to Killorglin and runs outside the western perimeter of the National Park. Cars can be left at Kate Kearney's Cottage from where the energetic can walk or hire a pony and trap or riding ponies for the trip through the Gap and back.

Description
The cottage was a coaching inn, where the hostess, Kate, allegedly cast her spell on all who entered and toasted them with her special brew. Now a pub and restaurant, there is every chance that you will be enchanted, but in a completely benign way, by the warm welcome and the fun at the regular music sessions. Coach trips to Kate Kearney's Cottage incorporate a pony and trap or pony ride through the Gap (clients can walk the 10km if preferred), a break for lunch and a boat trip on the lakes and back to Ross Castle, where there are coach transfers back to Killarney. Local tours and tours of the Ring of Kerry also operate in season.
