Leacanabuaile Stone Fort

Kerry

The interior of the fort is one of the best examples of its kind in Ireland. This is a round stone fort, with walls of about 10ft thick and has been reconstructed to a height of about 4ft. Inside are three stone beehive houses, the square house in the middle is apparently of a later date. There is also a souterrain, originally an escape area and a place of refuge and storage, and the remains of a rotary quern for grinding corn. Leacanabuaile is one of very few of these forts to be excavated, this was done in 1939/40. Objects found include iron, bone, bronze, lead and stones which are thought to date from the 9th or 10th century.
