The first Brendan Kennelly Festival was held in 2001 and has continued anually ever since. The festival takes place every August in Brendan's home village of Ballylongford. Sure to be regarded as one of Ireland's most popular literary and cultural events, the Brendan Kennelly Summer Festival is a truly international celebration of the work of Brendan Kennelly,  modern performing and visual arts. This four day event is a revival of the ancient Celtic Harvest Festival. There are activities aplenty as the locals encourage any tourists in the area to partake in such goings-on as hill walking, visits to the historical sites and the many beach and field competitions. There will also be loads of other entertainment such as poetry, music and plenty of song....

The festival caters for all members of the family with a line up that includes childrens sports, motorised treasure hunt, bonny baby competition, glamorous granny competition along with many other fun events. The main attraction of the festival is the Cailin Alainn competition where all the entrants are paraded through the town!!
