The three most spectacular buildings in Dublin - the Custom House, the Four Courts and King's Inn - are all the work of James Gandon, an English architect who was persuaded by Lord Beresford to come to Dublin to design his new Custom House in 1781.

It is a particularly fine specimen and belongs to a late period in the development of the sculptured free-standing ringed crosses. Father Matthew Statue

Standing in the centre of Patrick Street, this statue commemorates Fr. Thoebold Matthew, the apostle of Temperance(1790 - 1861), He was known and loved in Cork for his efforts to alleviate distress during the cholera epidemic of 1832 and during the Great Famine from 1845 to1850. He was also responsible for the purchase of the botanic gardens in Ballyphehane and the establishment of St Joseph's cemetery on that site.

The Speir Bhean (spirit woman) monument situated opposite the Franciscan Friary was erected to commemorate Kerry's four leading poets; Piaras Feirtear (1616-1653); Geoffrey O'Donoghue (1620 - 1690); Aogan O Rahilly (1670 - 1726) and Eoghan Rua O'Sullivan (1748 - 1784). The War Memorial
The Dimond, Derry, Derry
The centre of the walled city the Diamond was once occupied by the Town Hall but since 1927 it has been the site of the War Memorial. The bronze statues and portland stone which stand 40ft high and 27ft wide are in memeory of those from Derry who fought and lost their lives during World War 1 1914-1918. Each year the November Poppy Day Parade commemorates the war heroes and the memeory of all who last thier lives. Open All Year....
