Nenagh Castle And Franciscan Friary
Nenagh Castle And Franciscan Friary
Nenagh,North Tipperary
The present massive tower, or donjon, was originally one of three towers interspersed in the curtain wall of a strong Norman castle which was also guarded by two semicircular towers and a gatehouse (parts of which remain to the south of the tower). The tower has 5 storeys, and the walls are up to 20 feet thick. A southern window-niche opening off the second floor has Romanesque decoration on the inside, while there is early Gothic decoration on a chimney piece in the floor above.
The...
Fiddaun Castle
Fiddaun Castle
Gort,Galway
This is a fine early 16th century tower standing in a bawn. The ground and third floors are vaulted, and there are mullioned windows and a fine fireplace on the 3rd floor. The six-sided bawn is one of the best preserved in the country, and the projecting angle in the west wall, constructed so as to have a wider range of fire, is probably imitated from the star-shaped forts. Nearby are the ruins of a contemporary gatehouse.
The castle was one of three built and owned by the O'Shaughne...
Enniscorthy Castle And County Museum
Enniscorthy Castle And County Museum
Enniscorthy,Wexford
The original castle was founded either by a Prendergast or, less likely, by a Rochford some time between 1232 and 1240. This castle was later repaired by the present structure, which probably uses the same ground plan as the older castle, and which was built by Sir Henry Wallop between 1586 and 1595. the poet Edmund Spenser held a lease of the castle for three days in 1581.
The castle has four storeys, and rounded turrets at the corner (one of which starts above ground). It now con...
Butler Castle
Butler Castle
Ballyragget,Kilkenny
The well preserved tower and bawn in the town is the Butler Castle. In the 16th century the castle was the principal seat of this vibrant Norman-Irish family of far ranging and far reaching connections. The 3rd Viscount was President of the Supreme Council of the Confederation of Kilkenny. The castle remained in Butler possession until 1788 when it passed to the MacMurrough Kavanaghs of Borris Castle.
During the rebellion of 1798 it was utilised as a British army base. The Archbisho...
Kilteel Church And Castle
Kilteel Church And Castle
Kilteel,Kildare
In the medieval church a 12th century Romanesque chancel arch has been partially re-erected. It is unique in that it is the only Romanesque chancel arch in Ireland which has figure sculpture. On the south side can be seen Adam and Eve, a man with drinking horn, two figures embracing, an acrobat and David with the head of Goliath, while on the north side there is Samson and the Lion, two bearded faces, an abbot with a crosier and other figures. Nearby is a granite cross.
Classiebawn Castle
Classiebawn Castle
Sligo,Sligo
Classiebawn Castle which overlooks the charming resort of Mullaghmore, was the property of Viscount Palmerston, British Statesman and Prime Minister, who also built the harbour here.
The castle was completed by the first Lord Mount Temple in 1874 and later descended to the Moutbattens. Now privatedly owned and not open to the public....
Tollendal Castle
Tollendal Castle
Tuam,Galway
Some 7km along the road to Tuam, near Castletown House, is the site of the ancestral home of the Lally's, Tollendal (of Tullynadaly) Castle.
One member of the family, the celebrated Baron Lally, Marechal de France, made strenuous attempts to drive the English from India.
He failed and was executed by Louis xv as a traitor, but afterwards his name was cleared, and is inscribed in the Arch De Triomphe in Paris....
Glanworth Castle
Glanworth Castle
Glanworth,Cork
The kernel of the castle is a stout mid-13th century keep, almost square in plan and with walls more than 6 feet thick. The upper floors were originally made of wood, and the holes for the massive beams supporting them are still visible in the walls.
The keep is protected by an irregularly shaped curtain wall, and the corners of the stretch overlooking the river are further fortified by round turrets.
On the landward side, the gate-house of the 13th century castle was incorpor...
Tullira Castle
Tullira Castle
Gort,Galway
A little past Coole, Gort, the road passes the entrance to Tullira Castle, the home of Edward Martyn, poet and patron of the arts.
He was instrumental in starting the Dublin School of Stained Glass, some early and remarkable examples of which can be seen in nearby Labane church....
