These bare limestone islands project out into the Atlantic from Galway Bay. Traditional Irish life still continues on the islands. The Aran Way consists of three separate walks on the three Aran Islands. The walks are specially designed to show the walker the history of the islands, from the mysterious stone forts of unknown origin to the early Christian churches and graves, and also how the islands have created a living and happy community despite the harshness of their environment.

Although the town was founded as such in the medieval period, the history of settlement in the ara goes back much further in time. A brief tour of the town confirms this. Walking westwards from the Cathedral, you willfirst encountr the Temperance Hall, once a Cavalry Barracks.
