During the summer, the lake, with its cool, clear water fed from underground springs is a popular venue with locals and visitors. The Long Point with its car parks, changing and toilet facilities, is an excellent and safe place for swimming. An alternative site for younger children is the shallow sandy area at Coorheen. Because of its size, the lake is an excellent stretch of water for sailboarding and canoeing.

Boats can be hired by the day and offer an ideal opportunity to explore the lake's man-made islands, the prehistoric crannogs.

Fishing:
Loughrea Lake is an anglers dream. Stocked by the Loughrea Angling Association, it is well supplied with trout, perch and pike. Boats are available for hire and a fishing permit is also available for a modest fee. Other rivers around Loughrea include the Duniry river, near Dalystown, which yields good trout. The Bullaun river, north of Loughrea, contains plenty of brown trout and occasionally salmon. The Kilcolgan river, which runs from Kiltulla through Craughwell and enters Galway Bay at Kilcolgan has excellent fishing.
