inse guaire

The historical seat of King Guaire, (King of Connaught during the 6th century) and principal seat of the Chiefs of Cineal Aogh, and "gateway of the Burren" Gort is a well planned market town, which was for a long period a garrison town. The modern town was designed by the Paine brothers in the 19th century at the instigation of Lord Gort.

The karstic landscape of the area has many distinctive features e.g. subterranean rivers, underground caves, swallow holes and turloughs. Gort has a rich heritage of early Christian and late medieval sites. It also provides the tourists with the ideal base for visiting major literary and cultural places of interest e.g. Coole Park, home of Lady Gregory.
