This was originally the home of the Blakes, one of the tribes of Galway. Henry Blake purchased the Renvyle estate in 1680 from the Earl of Westmeath, who had been granted it under the Cromwellian settlements. Caroline Blake turned the house into a hotel in 1883. It was rebuilt following fire destruction in 1930....

Coole Park is the former home of Lady Augusta Gregory, a great friend of W.B. Yeats and co-founder of the Abbey Theatre. It's located about 3km north of the county Galway town of Gort and is operated by the National Parks & Wildlife Service. It spans about 1,000 acres and includes 6km of nature trails, 7 woods and of course Coole Lake.

A three-roomed cottage which the patriot Padraig Pearse (1879-1916) used as his summer residence. There are bedrooms on either side of the living room which has a fireplace, cooking and eating utensils as well as a spinning wheel. The west bedroom also served as a study. The items on display are replicas of those used in Pearse's time....

A roughly square enclosure surrounded by a 6 ft high wall having, at two opposing corners, rounded bastions with arrow-slits. Remains of the gateway to the enclosure are preserved.
The wall resembles castle bawns, but inside, instead of a tower, there are just the remains of one central rectangular house and a number of subsidiary rectangular buildings.

Nothing is known about the history of the place, but it was possibly built by a retainer of the de Burgs as a fortified homestead...
