A roughly square enclosure surrounded by a 6 ft high wall having, at two opposing corners, rounded bastions with arrow-slits. Remains of the gateway to the enclosure are preserved.
The wall resembles castle bawns, but inside, instead of a tower, there are just the remains of one central rectangular house and a number of subsidiary rectangular buildings.

Nothing is known about the history of the place, but it was possibly built by a retainer of the de Burgs as a fortified homestead...

The building, which is now the well known Tigh Neachtain pub was once the town house of Richard Martin of Ballinahinch, Connemara whose notoriety as a duelist in the 18th century earned him the title 'Hair-Trigger Dick'.

As a Member of Parliament he was instrumental in bringing in new anti-cruelty laws which led directly to the founding of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals - and a new nickname, 'Humanity Dick'....

Number 47 Dominick Street, now Galway Arts Centre, was once the town house of Lady Augusta Gregory. She was a leading light in the Irish Literary Revival at the turn of this century and at her home at Coole Park near Gort, she played host to Ireland's leading writers. Her city residence has since been home to Galway Corporation, and now the Arts Centre, which has regular exhibitions and theatre shows....
