Local area

Portumna town is located closeby and is a well known fishing centre. Attraction include a 9 hole golf course, tennis court and Portumna Forest Park which is a wildlife sanctuary and includes a laid out nature trail and forest walks.

It is also a popular sailing point where you can enjoy a relaxing cruise along the Shannon. Horseriding and angling can also be enjoyed lcoally.

Portumna Castle is also located closeby. It was completed in 1617 by Richard Burke who was the 4th Earl of Clanricarde, but was destroyed by fire in 1826. The ground floor of the castle is now open to the public for viewing.

Description

This is an excellent base for exploring the surrounding countryside. You can also partake in a variety of outdoor activities including a round of golf at nearby Portumna Golf Club and the region is also a noted centre for freshwater fishing due to the proximity of Lough Derg.
There is also a wildlife sanctuary on the shores of this lake, which is of great ecological interest.

The town of Portumna itself is home to a fantastic range of pubs and restaurants that are perfect for an evening’s entertainment.
