Title of show and origin:
Borrowed from the phrase "one man's rubbish is another man's treasue"
The title of the show came to me while looking at an old sign, that had been removed
from a wall. The nails and steel beam that held it in place had become eroded and rusted over time.
This left behind a circle image that rusted to the ground.
For me this created a visually pleasing image to work with. It wasnt long however before the stain
was painted over, it appeared my treasure was another mans rubbish!
Artist’s Statement:
In my two previous shows i focused on the building, then breaking down of structural
elements within my work. My paintings reflected our sprawling urban enviroment, such
as building projects captured in transition. Working against this building process lay the
ruinous conditions of weathered paint surfaces and rusted stains that would pertain to the
surface of our city.
This new body of work continues with this subject, often incorporating materials that would
be more commonly used for construction. Metal plates which i curve and polish have become
a dominant feature. The use of various materials brings into focus a more assembled
and sculpted feel to the work. Many are in dyptyct formation, which work in tandem to a more
abstract architectural space that exists below them. Through the reflective nature of the metal
there is constant change. Working with this change is a rust like image that subsides, adding
a sense of movement throughout.
