Smithfield can be described as one of the most historic areas in Dublin city, as it is the site where horse and cattle trading began in 1664 and the markets in 1913. 1999 saw a huge redevelopment of the area when the 400,000 antique cobblestones in the famous square were manually removed and the grime of 120 years was cleaned off by hand before they were re-laid alongside new granite slabs. During this redevelopment, the long standing tradition of the monthly horse fair was moved to a temporary site in Grangegorman. The fairs main event is the buying and selling of horses.
Description
In recent years, Smithfield village has been developed into, not only a sophisticated residential, commercial and cultural district, but also a contemporary urban landscape. It is literally a village within the city. It offers a unique and innovative experience with its distinctive architecture and blend of culture and tourism, which it achieves through a mix of entertaining visitor attractions and facilities including Chief O’Neill’s Hotel, a traditional music café bar, Ceol, The Chimney and the Old Jameson Distillery together with a selection of buzzing bars, innovative restaurants and vibrant shopping.

It is envisaged that regular markets and carnivals will be held there and that new cafés and restaurants will continue to develop while keeping in character with the district.
