Smashing Times Theatre Company was founded in 1991 by a group of women committed to providing access to drama and theatre in communities that would not usually be exposed to the arts. The company recognises the power of drama in relation to its effect on personal and community development. While providing this access the board members discovered that many of the women in the audience were themselves interested in devising and performing plays and so "Switched On - ESB Accessing Theatre for Women" was born.

The "Switched On" - ESB Accessing Theatre for Women community arts programme creates a niche in the drama world for women of all walks of life. The aim is to use drama as a tool for social change. The plays celebrate and explore the diversity of women's experiences and challenge the boundaries of what constitutes the female perspective. Every year sees the company work with over 10 different women's theatre groups both North and South of the border with work focusing on, and inspired by social issues relevant to the group in question.
