Motor sport is controlled and co-ordinated, both nationally and internationally, by FIA (Federation Internationale de l'automobile) who are based in Paris. Each affiliated country has a vote at it's general assembly. The FIA recognises in each country one sole authority which holds the sporting power. This is called the Autorite sportive nationale (ASN) which in our case is, of course, the RIAC.

The RIAC, therefore, is entrusted with enforcing the international sporting code in this country. The RIAC in its turn exercises this authority through it's " Motor Sport Commission". The Motor sport Department is based in Dublin.

The RIAC has affiliated to it's 35 motor clubs who are the actual organisers of all sporting events. In the current year there are 233 events listed in the official calendar and these cover all branches of the sport. If a club wishes to organise an event, they must first apply for a date on the calendar and then submit the proposed regulations and obtain a permit.
