The British were the originators of Water Polo. As far back as 1870, or earlier, a game in the water was being played. Because it was like soccer, it became known as "football-in-the-water". But it was not until 1885 that the governing body for the sport recognised the game.The early rules were primitive and varied from area to area. Eventually, a common set of rules was agreed upon for the British game and these were the basis for the international rules of the future....
