The British were the originators of Water Polo. As far back as 1870, or earlier, a game in the water was being played. Because it was like soccer, it became known as "football-in-the-water". But it was not until 1885 that the governing body for the sport recognised the game. The early rules were primitive and varied from area to area. Eventually, a common set of rules was agreed upon for the British game and these were the basis for the international rules of the future.

Description
The aim of the game is to get the ball into the net of the defending side, usually after a series of passing movements. A game consists of four quarters of five minutes each. The teams change ends before the start of each new quarter, and there are intervals of two minutes between each quarter.
A team has seven players, one of whom must be the goalkeeper, and four reserves, who may be used as substitutes. Usually, each side wears caps, one set dark blue and one white, which are numbered on both sides and tied with tapes under the chin. After a goal has been scored (the ball must pass fully over the goal line) the players take up positions anywhere within their respective halves. A player, from the team that did not score, restarts the game on a whistle sign from the referee. He or she passes the ball from the centre line to another member of the team who must be behind the half-distance line when he or she receives it.
You will want to be a strong swimmer to get into this sport.
