Hockey, a stick-and-ball game, is played in more than 70 countries and on all five continents. It is a big sport in India and Pakistan. Here in Ireland, it is played in leagues across the country.
The game is played by two teams, with 11 players on each side. A game will last around 70 minutes, with two periods of 35 minutes ( and a half-time interval of 5 to 10 minutes). The game starts in the centre of the field, where the ball is placed. Two players of opposing sides stand ready to strike the ball. The object of the game, like many others, is to get the ball into the goal. In hockey, you move the ball along the field with the face of your stick. Players pass the ball and "dribble" it down the field in the attack. The opposing side tries to intercept or "tackle". To play the game, you need to be able to stop and hit the ball. Hockey is a game in which control of the ball with your stick is everything. And, how do you hold this mighty stick? It is held firmly in both hands, the left above the right. When making a hit, the hands move close together, but for other strokes (push, flick, Scoop) the left hand grasps the stick near the top and the right hand moves to a position further down the handle.
